Helen Michie
Helen Michie lives in the west Highlands of Scotland. She studied Sculptural & Architectural Ceramics at Grays School of Art in Aberdeen. She makes a variety of work including Raku fired ceramic wall pieces, stoneware decorative bowls and porcelain sculptures. She also creates public art mosaic and paintings.
Helen’s work is informed by the stunning natural surroundings of the west Highlands, responding to the coastal, forest and moorland environments. The Raku fired pieces aim to capture a moment in time and the ever-changing seasons. The work is first fired in an electric kiln and then for a second time outdoors, in a gas kiln. The weather on the day of firing can determine the finished look of the piece with the west coast elements giving each work its own unique pattern of smoked markings and colour.
