Ruined Croft House, The Great Bernera Isle
Jolomo - John Lowrie Morrison OBE
Oil on canvas. Image size: 24 x 24 inches. Framed size: 33 x 33 inches.
Great Bernera is an island of about 21 sq km, on the West side of the Isle of Lewis. In the 19th century, it was an industrious fishing community. In 1827 alone, 60,000 lobsters were sent to London from Bernera. In 1874, the crofters of Bernera resisted the Clearances in what is known as the Bernera Riot. A population which was once 600 is now around 20.
John says: “It’s a smashing place – I’ve been a few times and have wanted to paint it for a long time. The ruined crofts all over the Hebrides tell stories about the people who once lived there, and what might have happened to them.”
